What You Should Teach Your ChildWhat Parents Should Tell Their Children About Dogs Your own dog might be the soppiest, friendliest and cuddliest pooch around but children must be made aware that not all dogs will act the same way. When in the vicinity of other dogs always make sure your child is within arms distance and always under your supervision. Even something as mundane as dangling feet can be stimulating to dogs as they may think its a game and jump up and bite. Your child, for their own safety, must be educated to have common sense when interacting with other people's dogs. First things first, teach them to always ask permission from the dog's owner to stroke or say hello to the dog, especially if the dog is unfamiliar. A responsible owner will let them know if there is any danger. If they allow your child to stroke the dog, let the dog approach them, and tell your child to slowly put their fist out with the fingers pointing down so the dog can smell them before they stroke it. This way you will see if the dog likes them or could be potentially aggressive. You must tell your children never to approach dogs that are sleeping or resting, especially under benches because all dogs whatever their size or breed are potential biters. You don't know the dog's history or how they are treated at home. A common act that causes a dog to bite is bending over and putting your head or face to theirs or hugging them, so your child must be taught not to do this even if the dog in question seems friendly. Also grabbing, pinching or poking a dog can provoke it so children must be discouraged from this type of behavior. If there are dogs running around the park, your child should not run and scream as this may cause the dogs to chase them and also discourage playing roughly with other children or dogs. Lastly if a dog growls at your child tell them to avoid eye contact and not to run away as fast as possible but back away slowly still avoiding eye contact with the dog. If they have something like a ball in their pocket tell them to use it to distract the dog. Any responsible dog owner will be able to control their dog and they will not cause your child any harm. There have been lots of dog attacks on children in the news recently so teach your child these basics and you will have peace of mind in knowing that your child knows how to act responsibly around dogs.
