Puppy House Training

Train Your Puppy at Home

It's often been observed that puppy house-training a puppy at home is far easier than training adult dogs. And there is a good reason for this conclusion. Puppies are still getting used to and responding to their environments, thus you can have greater control of their behavior. In a sense, you are creating the foundation for your puppys future actions. It's a lot easier to train a puppy who has had no prior training and has not yet developed a response characteristic of responding to commands.

Training your puppy at home will be much simpler because you can structure a controlled environment in which the the puppy will react in specific ways. Once your puppy accept this environment traininghim will be much easier for you to accomplish.

A good example is a puppy that jumps up on you whenever you talk to him. The trainer should respond by never rewarding the puppy in any way when this happens. Then show the puppy that he will receive a reward whenever he responds to people by sitting instead of jumping up. This will result in a well behaved adult dog who will always sit when greeting people.

Training your puppy at home will condition him to respond as you want him to. Usually, this form of close one-on-one training eliminates the probability that your dogs misconduct and behavioral problems will repeat and save you from potential problems in the future.

A good example is potty training. This is probably one of the most important things you can teach a dog. The best way is to take your pupy for frequent walks. Praise him whenever he relieves himself outdoors. Give him a treat, pat him on the head, tell him what a good dog he is. Do this every time he does it sucessfully. Whe the dog is in the house, you usually begin by teaching the dog to potty only on newspapers. It is best if you put the papers on a linoleum or vinyl floor so it is easier to clean up any staining or residue. Pick up the soiled newspapers after each episode and throw them in the garbage outside. Then replace the newspapers in the same spot. Again, praise your puppy each time he uses the newspaper. Make him feel like he has discovered the Canine Rosetta Stone. You must also scold him when he makes a mistake. Don't make the mistake of berating him, but let him know that you are unhappy with his "mistake" Continue to walk him frequently ouside and praise him to the heavens whenever he drops a load.

When he has learned that he has to do his business on the newspaper, you begin to move the newspaper towards the front door. Then gradually move the paper under the door giving him less and less surface to target.

Depending on the age of your puppy, there may be situations where he will act contrary to your wishes. This could be a result of previously learned behaviors which you will have to overcome. This is done by training your puppy to do the things you expect him to do and teaching him how to respond. The foregoing are best accomplished by the application of much praise and reward when the puppy does what you expect him to do and quick corrections and appropriate scolding when he is not responsive.

I should ad that puppies, to be trained well, need someone with the proper attitude and an understasnding of how puppies react to their their trainer's handling. Few puppies start out with a good grasp of the English language so you should learn how to communicate with them. This is only a short article so there is no room for a lengthy dissertation here, but if you have never trained a dog before you should at least get a good book on the subject. Your local library should have a sever of the better ones available.

Training session should be frequent, but short. In the beginning, limit your puppy's training sessions to less than an hour at five minutes. Training sessions should never be a test of endurance, puppies can have very short attention spans and they tire easilly. Train five, rest and play; train five, rest and play; rinse and repeat. Stop when your puppy seems tired or too distracted. Give him a big hug.

Always be positive and gentle and avoid any form of punishment, whatsoever.
