Leash Or Not LeashLeash or Not to Leash (in the Park)? Do you know what the one thing that you must be convinced of if you plan on going down the park with your dog and want to let it of the leash is? They must listen and obey you instantly when you call them back. If you are unsure of this don't let your dog of the leash when there are other dogs around. If this applies to you, try and find a quieter park or choose a different time when there are no dogs around to give your dog a good run about. Why? Even if your dog is friendly not everyone's dog will get on with it. And if it goes bounding over to an unknown dog on a leash you can't know for sure what reaction that dog will have. Even if you think that breed is alright to approach you don't know its history - it might be a rescue dog or been mistreated in its lifetime. Also people don't get on with everyone else straight away so why would you expect that of dogs? Ways around this are always ask permission from the other dog owner whether it is alright to approach the dog or watch for signs like the dog owner reeling in the leash, which is a big hint not to approach. You should really check the park regulations to see if walking dogs of the leash is allowed as a lot of people let dogs of leashes regardless of the rules. But if you are going to let your dog of the leash, you must watch it at all times. Don't get distracted by conversations or think 'my dog is good it won't get up to anything'. Places may stay the same but the people or dogs walking through that park won't be. So make sure your dog doesn't: - Bother other dogs, unless you know them because I'm not saying don't socialize your dog; - Hassle other people or children, especially if they are eating; - Cause any damage to the landscape or wildlife; and - Poop when you are not looking so you have an excuse not to clear it up. Why cause any upset to other people or their dogs or you and your dog because if a dog fight occurs there are no winners as both animals risk getting hurt and could even be put to sleep. Many people's dogs are an extension of the family so look out for them, make sure they don't get in any fights or cause any trouble to anyone else when you are around just like they are your most precious child or your best friend.
