Is Your House DangerousIs Your House Dangerous for Your Dog? When you look around your house, you may not see some of the dangers that lurk that might harm your dog. You need to get down on all fours and see it from your dog's perspective! Use common sense and think what precautions you might need to take. Make sure all chemical toxins are out of reach and if your dog is very inquisitive put child proof latches on the cupboards where they are kept. Things like antifreeze, rat poison, fertilizer, de-icing salts must be stored safely away. Some human foods should never be given to dogs as they are toxic so never feed your pet chocolate, raisins, grapes and always throw away chicken bones straightaway as they can easily shatter and stab or choke your dog. As you would a child, keep all medication like painkillers, vitamins, diet pills and cold medicines out of your dog's reach as these could make your pet very poorly. Be ultra vigilant in finding any misplaced or dropped pills. All medications for animals should come from a vet and be for that animal only. Common household items like string, coins and rubber bands left lying about could potentially choke or strangle your dog or get stuck in their intestines so make sure these are put away. Ensure the toys you buy your dog are adequate. Always watch your dog when they are playing with their toys and be careful of stuffed toys with squeakers and plastic eyes or a balls that are too small which could cause your dog to choke. So keep those golf balls well out of reach (the inside of golf balls are also often toxic)! Keep outside doors locked (the last thing you want would be for your precious dog to run out your house and onto the road) especially if your dog can open doors as so many can and make sure sharp objects are never left on the floor. Keep an eye out for broken glass when you are out and about as well. If you think your dog has consumed something it shouldn't have, try to determine the substance/material responsible and take a look at the ingredients or deduce what you think might have happened and then call your vet immediately Basically pet proofing your home means taking the same precautions as you would with a small child so make sure your home is a safe haven for your dog.
